The Buccaneers RFC ran in a season-high eight tries against Bay Street RFC for a big win on Saturday June 27.  It was Bay St. who would strike first in the match with a penalty kick, to lead the match 3 - 0.  However it was all Bucs after that point scoring three tries in the first half, and five more in the second.  The Bucs would have had one more 5 pointer, however Tyson Staples, one of the Bucs speed-merchant wings, ran through the end zone, inciting cries of 'run Forest, run!' from his teammates.  Final score 56 - 3.  Bucs' coach Peter Towill was very pleased with the team effort, as well as being able to bring on all seven Bucs subs who all performed well.  Credit must be given to Bay Street who never backed down throughout 80 minutes and were committed to attacking rugby until the final whistle.
Man of the Match:  Bucs flanker Paul 'Colesy' Collins earned this week's honours.  Paul was all over the pitch, making big tackles and securing ball possession, as well as running in a fine try.  Honourable mentions must made of fly-half and captain Simon Cooper who converted all eight tries, and, fullback Aaron Barber who ran in a whopping four tries of his own.
Tries: Barber (4), James Phillips, Paul Collins, Jared Cox and Gideon Haasbroek.
Converts: Cooper (8)

The Buccaneers RFC travelled to Cobourg to take on the Saxons on Saturday June 20th. The Bucs were determined to play a better match then the last time these clubs met, where Cobourg handed the Toronto club a 31 - 0 loss.
Cobourg would score first with a dubious penalty try.  They would build on this lead with 3 more tries, while the Bucs responded with a penalty kick and an unconverted try.  At the half, the Bucs were in a deep hole down 26 - 8.
The second half saw the Bucs come roaring back, scoring 17 answered points, the last being a converted try which put the Bucs within a point of the Saxons with 5 minutes left.  However, the Bucs would run out of time losing 26 - 25.  Man of the Match wen to the scrum-half Adam MacMillan.  Adam played a tough match, doing well to dig for the ball and took punishing hits while making sure the ball was distributed.
TRIES: Jared Cox, Gideon Haasbroek (2), Brian Crothers
CONVERTS: Simon Cooper (1)  PENALTIES: Cooper (1)

The Buccaneers 2nds played a tough match against the Cobourg 2nds immediately after the 1sts.  The Bucs were edged by Cobourg 24 - 17, with Bucs tries coming from Aaron Barber and Duane Farrell.  2nds captain Jeremy Finehad a big match, scrummaging well and making big hits in the loose, but it was Barber who would be awarded Man of the Match with a big game on offense.

The Bucs next see action June 27th against Bay Street RFC.  This match may be played at Fletcher's Field.  Stay tuned for more details.

BUCS .500 AFTER 1st FOUR TESTS

The Buccaneers RFC stand 2 - 2 after their first 4 matches of the season, having lost Saturday June 13th to the Orillia Dingoes RFC in a hard fought affair.  At the half it was 7 - 7 in an evenly contested match, but Orillia would score another converted try and two penalties in the second half, while keeping the Bucs off the scoresheet, ending the match 20 - 7.  Bucs flanker Gideon Haasbroek scored their only try, with flyhalf Simon Cooper converting.  Although a loss, it was a marked improvement from the Bucs drubbing they suffered at the hands of Cobourg the previous weekend.  Just a few errant passes in Saturday's match against the Dingoes were all the difference from the Bucs backline putting tries on the board and opening up the game.  The Dingoes must be given full credit for their aggressive defence and commitment to finishing their tackles.

The Bucs next travel to Cobourg on June 20th to take on the Saxons RFC.  Kick-off is 3 pm.

On June 6 the Buccaneers celebrated their annual Alumni Day where Buccaneers RFC were pleased to induct two new members into their Hall of Fame.  The 2009 recipients were Clifford Smith and Damien Keenan, both of who were founding members of the Buccaneers Rugby Club, established 1976.  In memory of both players (who have both previously passed on to the big rugby pitch in the sky), Bucs President Jose Duarte, and Bucs Alumni Director Todd Smith made toasts in their honour.  The Buccaneers Club are very proud to now have Damien Keenan and Clifford Smith a part of their Hall of Fame.

It was also announced on Alumni Day that an Autumn Tour to Kingston has been organized.  The tour-by-train will be leaving October 2nd and returning October 4th.  The Buccaneers are scheduled to play two matches - an Old Boys and 1st Team.  The Kingston Panthers RFC will be hosting.  Please contact Stu at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it for more info.

BUCS START SEASON 2 - 0

The Buccaneers RFC played host to Bay Street Pigs RFC Sunday May 24th in their first home field match.  Throughout the first half, Bay St.'s kept the Bucs in their half, but the the Buccaneers defense kept the Pigs out of their end-zone and the half ended scoreless for either side.  The second half was a reversal of fortunes as the Bucs pack started to assert themselves in the scrum.  In particular, Bucs prop Geoff Bishop made it a difficult day in the office for his opposite number.  With stable set piece play, the boys in blue ran in three unanswered tries, to end the game 19 - 0 winners over Bay St.
Tries: Chris Duggan, Simon Cooper and Paul Coles.  Converts: Cooper (2)

The second rugby match of the day saw the Buccaneers 2nd XV hosting a touring North Penn RFC.  The exhibition match was a great game for Bucs members new to the club to strut their stuff, and for those newer to the game itself.  Thanks goes out to members of the Bay Street RFC who volunteered a handful of players to fill out the Bucs squad.  Although it was a lop sided win for the tourists, Bucs coach Peter Towill was pleased to be able to evaluate new Bucs players during a full game.  Man of the match went to Buccaneers Kamal LaBreche, who at lock, played hard for a full 80 minutes in what was his first full rugby game.

The Buccaneers next see action on June 6th when they host the Coburg Saxons RFC at Sunnybrook.  This match will also be the Buccaneers RFC Alumni Day, where Bucs Hall of Fame inductee(s) will be honoured in after match festivities at the Fox and Fiddle.
